BAHA Legislators’ Spouses Trained on Women, Girls’ Empowerment

Spouses of members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly (BAHA), led by their Chairperson, Haj. Abi Hafsat AYS, have concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop in Lagos focused on empowering women and girls across their constituencies.

The delegation participated in the programme aimed at exposing them to global best practices and practical strategies for improving the socio-economic wellbeing of women, enhancing livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for girls at the grassroots.

On arrival, the legislators’ spouses were received by the wife of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who conducted them round the Assembly complex. They were hosted by the management and staff, a gesture the delegation described as warm and commendable. The visit also featured a tour of notable sites across Lagos.

The second day featured intensive engagements, including a strategic session with the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada. Discussions centred on policy-driven approaches to women’s empowerment, with emphasis on collaboration between state and local governments to expand access to education, skills acquisition, and economic inclusion for women.

The participants noted that empowering women remains critical to reducing poverty levels and strengthening family and community structures, stressing that enabling women to realise their full potential would significantly boost economic productivity and social stability.

The Clerk of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Haj. Hauwa A. Abubakar, accompanied the delegation, with expectations high that lessons from the workshop would translate into impactful programmes for women and girls at the grassroots level.

Mukhtar Garba Kobi, spokesperson to the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, confirmed the development, noting that the initiative reflects the growing commitment of legislators’ spouses to championing inclusive development and sustainable empowerment initiatives across Bauchi State.
